Project Description
The Vietnamese provinces that share the Srepok’s catchment are undergoing rapid and intensive development, much of it based on agriculture. Likewise, hydropower development in the Srepok has been extensive, with five dams currently operating and two more proposed. In addition, there are large numbers of irrigation and water supply reservoirs throughout the catchment, as well as significant (although depleted) groundwater reserves. Changes to water flow and abstraction in Vietnam is of great relevance to downstream Cambodia. MK17 considered the impact of these changes on the flows of the Srepok River drawing on baselines provided by previous studies. It implemented a water audit for the catchment, and then considered the ways variations in water flow would impact (a) demands from agriculture; (b) demand by the environment; (c) demand from industry; (e) demand from urban areas; and (f) water supply to Cambodia. The project will also try to predict water demands from these sectors into the future, and consider such management adjustments as will be needed in order to secure the sustainable use of water for livelihoods, economy and the environment in the Srepok catchment.
