Vientiane Times, April, 17 2014

Nam Ngum 5 Power Company Ltd has provided US$43,000 worth of assistance both in kind and in cash to people who were affected by the construction of the hydropower project.

The aid items were provided to residents of Chim and Namting villages in Phoukhoun district, Luang Prabang province, including 27 tonnes of rice, textbooks and other education materials as well as sporting uniforms.

Cash amounting to US$19,000 was also handed over to develop and promote sanitation in Namting village.

General Manager of the Nam Ngum 5 Power Company Ltd Mr Song Huihong presented the aid items to the district governor Mr Viengthong Hatsachanh.

The Nam Ngum 5 Power Plant in Luang Prabang province officially began generating electricity in December, 2012 after Sinohydro Corporation Ltd began building the plant in 2008.

The US$200 million dam has an installed capacity of 120MW, with planned annual power generation of 507GWh.

The project is a joint venture between China’s Sinohydro Corporation and Electricite du Laos (EDL) and has a 25-year concession agreement.

After the end of the concession period, ownership of the plant will be transferred to the Lao government.
